Legend has it that glass was born from an accident.
Three thousand years ago, during the Spring and Autumn period, the forge fires for sword-making burned day and night. Metals melted and surged in the intense heat. Just as the sword was about to be completed, a craftsman discovered a translucent congealed substance in the furnace slag. It was warm and smooth like jade, yet more fluid; it was not like gold, but carried the weight of metal; though it had been tempered by fierce flames, it revealed a clarity like water.
He held this piece up to the light. The light penetrated through and emerged from the other side. Legend says this fire-born light later became a token of love between couples. When a woman parted, her tears fell upon it, and so later generations said that the beauty of glass lies not only in its crystal clarity, but also in the stories hidden within its glow.
The origin of the legend is untraceable, but it is true that glass was born from the furnace fire.
Later, archaeologists found traces of glass at Western Zhou dynasty sites and on Spring and Autumn period ancient swords. Glazed sand beads were unearthed from Western Zhou sites, and blue glass was inlaid on the sword guards of Spring and Autumn period swords. From that time, glass began to develop in different directions.
From the common people to the imperial court, glass has always been associated with nobility.
Some was made into bi discs, sword ornaments, and bead strings for personal wear. These items were touched daily, absorbing body heat, gradually becoming warm and smooth in the palm. Another part was fired into glaze, covering palace roofs, temple walls, screen walls, and halls piece by piece, becoming symbols of power and faith. Those glazed tiles reflected a cold light from high above, and no one would approach to touch them.
The luster of glass depended on the craftsman’s mastery of the kiln temperature. Earth, glaze, minerals, and fire underwent irreversible changes in the kiln to produce that bright yet deep radiance.
