Morandi spent his entire life painting bottles and jars, the same subjects over and over—sometimes painting the same set dozens of times. He rarely left Bologna, didn’t travel or seek new themes, just stared at the few objects on his table repeatedly.

Those clay pots, tin boxes, and glazed bowls originally had slight color differences—reds, greens, grays—each speaking its own language when placed together. But Morandi did one thing: he mixed white and gray into every color, dragging them all into a very narrow tonal range. It sounds simple, but required immense precision. He set a boundary for each color: you can keep your faintest identity, but don’t step beyond this line.

If you look closely at Morandi’s paintings, you’ll notice everything speaks at the same volume—no color jumps out, none shouts. The boundaries between bottles and jars become subtle. He didn’t eliminate differences; he turned their volume down to a whisper.

This harmony has a premise: everything is under his control. Every proportion of gray, every layer of white, was calibrated repeatedly. No surprises could appear in the painting, because surprises were already blocked on the palette.

Years ago, our team conducted a color study in Dunhuang. Before even entering the caves, we already had an impression of “Dunhuang colors” in our minds—that uniform, quiet, low-saturation palette seen repeatedly on screens, very close to Morandi’s feel.

Once inside, we realized it was completely different. The mural colors were far more abundant and chaotic than on screen—some hues had shifted, others had darkened, and a few areas still retained their original vibrancy. Up close, the wall seemed messy, each color in its own state, as if they hadn’t acknowledged each other.

But strangely, when you stepped back a few feet to view the entire wall, that chaos disappeared. All colors were different, each taking its own path, yet none clashed—a harmony hard to describe.

Morandi x Dunhuang: They Never Met in 600 Years, So Why Do They Look So Alike?

Only after learning more about these pigments did it all make sense—the mineral pigments used in Dunhuang murals, such as malachite green, azurite blue, cinnabar, and lead red, were all highly saturated when first applied, with vivid reds and blues creating stark contrasts. Over thousands of years, each mineral followed a completely different path of change due to its unique chemical properties: lead red slowly oxidized into brown, azurite blue transformed into malachite green under specific humidity conditions, cinnabar gradually darkened under prolonged light exposure, while some minerals barely changed at all.

They have coexisted on the same wall for millennia, each aging at its own pace. No one unified them, and no hand adjusted them to the same hue—time itself did the work.

Morandi’s quietness was something he mixed himself—adding white and gray stroke by stroke on the palette, corralling all colors into the same tonal band. But on that Dunhuang wall, no one did that; azurite blue, lead red, and cinnabar sat there for a millennium, each aging into its current state, and coincidentally, they too grew quiet.

They do look remarkably similar, but the paths to that quietness were quite different.
