How Far Back Can a Single Wall Take You

On the courtyard gate of an old southern house, there was a kind of red—not paint, but the color iron slowly turns when left to the air long enough. Over the years, the old paint loosened and flaked away, revealing layers of oxidation beneath: deep near chestnut shell, lighter with an amber glow, and paler still, an uncertain orange, as if the iron hadn’t yet decided what color to become. Touching it felt rough, slightly warm; fingertips could sense fine powder, and a light rub left rust stains on the skin.

Many of us had such a gate in childhood. When pushed open, the hinges creaked, and Rust Patina dust sifted down from the frame. Behind it stretched long afternoons filled with cicadas, a ceiling fan turning slowly overhead, sunlight streaming through wooden window grilles to cast a grid on the floor. Shadows crept across it so slowly that those afternoons felt endless.

Back then, we didn’t realize that those unhurried, carefree afternoons would become so hard to find as adults.

Somewhere along the way, life sped up. The cold subway handrail never warms before your stop arrives; you type the last line at 5 a.m. and realize dawn has broken; by day’s end, you can’t remember how today was different from yesterday. Every surface in the city feels the same—elevator buttons, office desks—all smooth and cold, as if nothing ever happened. Living like this for too long, you occasionally recall the feel of that iron gate: rough, sun-warmed, leaving rust dust on your fingers. Those things that once burned to the touch have drifted far from your life.

So later, I painted a wall at the end of my hallway in Rust Patina red—just to leave something less than smooth in a place I pass every day. Its rough surface, with texture and warmth, brought back the feel of that old courtyard gate.

This texture that slows you down has also made its way outdoors.

At this year’s Shanghai International Flower Festival, an outdoor garden brought the flower fields of Grasse, southern France, to the city center. The scent of roses and jasmine filled the air, sweet and languid; layers of iris purple, jasmine white, and rose pink unfolded, making you forget you were in Shanghai. Following the flower beds deeper in, you discovered a Rust Patina red wall standing behind all the colors.

No matter how vivid and lively the blooms, when you reached this wall, your steps slowed. Perhaps because the rough, aged surface alongside the garden’s profusion brought out the best in both—the fresh became fresher, the deep, deeper.

In the hallway, it made you pause. Surrounded by a garden full of flowers, it did the same.

Coming back from the garden to the house, back to that hallway.

I don’t always stop when I pass that wall every day. The iron particles on it are still reacting with the air, and the color shifts daily—just very, very slowly. So slowly that you only notice it’s gotten a shade deeper after living there for a long time. The texture grows along with it, and the older it gets, the more it looks like it was always part of the house. Everything else in the home races to keep up with our pace, but this wall moves at its own speed. It doesn’t rush or push, just quietly keeps you company through the days.
